Laserbladers

Screenplay by Robert C. Powers

Inspired by a Novel by Lee Garrett

Genre: Fantasy adventure                                                                                              Page count: 95

Logline: A young blind girl is kidnapped from a roller rink and taken to the Nightmare Dimension where she is to marry the Lord of Nightmare and open Realworld to be plundered; her boyfriend and his friends are summoned to Dreamscape, granted special powers by the Protector and sent to rescue her. (Coverage: A timeless message of “one for all and all for one” rings true with a modern edge).

Synopsis: SHADOWMOR, LORD OF NIGHTMARE, watches as a fissure opens to Realworld and reveals LILY, blind and pretty and her date ERIC, a brainiac Nerd, as they approach the new hot spot; Laserblade Rink where DAVY and his TEN PETAFLOP COMPUTER create holographic images for kids on skates to shoot for prizes.  Eric fears that Lily would never date him if she could see him. He must somehow prove himself.

Nightmare mines positive energy from Realworld; it’s the fuel on which Nightmare runs, and Shadowmor must have access to Realworld to fuel his army of SPECTERS and put down a rebellion of his subjects. Access has been denied him by PRINCE PHOENIX OF DREAMSCAPE, Guardian of Realworld. Lily resents and hates her father; blames him for her mother’s death and her blindness which resulted from a kidnapping when she was five years old. Lily, a good person who also seethes with hate, is the Nexus which will allow Nightmare access to Realworld, but only if she admits her hate and marries Lord Shadowmor.

Eric and Lily meet their friends; JESSE the jock (black), his tech nerd brother Jake (black), his girl, the free spirited Roxy (black) and her pet ferret, DOOKY. They're out to party and don’t notice WANT, a caustic, psycho chic and her disgusting brother IGGY; dispatched by Shadowmor to capture Lily.   If they succeed, they will cease to be lowly SHADOWS and become DARK KNIGHTS.  They capture Lily, and Shadowmor tells her he will restore her sight and punish her father if she marries him.

Eric and his friends are summoned to Dreamscape and given a choice: fight to save Lily, or lose her and open Realworld to evil. The stakes up dramatically. The Prince grants them special powers and they become “Laserbladers,” able to fly on skates and enter worlds in other dimensions. They must find Lily before she gives in to her hate and resentment. Everything is on the line; especially for Eric, who must prove that he’s a leader.

The Laserbladers enter the dimension of Nightmare, encounter  shadowy creatures and are tempted by Want and Iggy who know their secret “wants” and “fears”. Just as Lily is about to give in to Lord Shadowmor, they find her, but Shadowmor snatches her and creates a vortex into Realworld.  Eric and his team chase them to find that Shadowmor is really Davy. Eric rescues Lily and they fight Davy and the SPECTERS.  A laser gun sears Lily’s eyes and her sight is restored.  For the first time she sees Eric!

Davy captures Lily again and hooks her up to his super computer, which needs the “Nexus” she provides to keep the path to Realworld open. Jake gets Roxy to send Dooky to plant a VIRUS WORM in the super computer.  The computer blows and the fissure between Nightmare and Realworld is sealed. Lily comes to terms with her father. She and her new hero, Eric, lead the Laserbladers on in alliance with Prince Phoenix to fight evil.

Coverage:  Some stories move directors to such vision that they become memorable for the best reason: a story well written and well told. This script could not only be one of the great 'tweener/teen' scripts, its timeless message of “one for all and all for one” rings true with a modern edge. (Silver Bitela Agency)

Locations:   A roller rink is transformed into dimensions of Realworld, Nightmare where hate rules and Dreamscape where love and the guardians of Realworld reside.

Characters:  Two lead, three supporting, twenty-four others

Laserbladers is a fresh look at the fantasy adventure genre and has multi-platform written all over it; series, gaming, novels, etc. With beats similar to the Wizard of Oz, Tron and Matrix, we think this script has superbly crafted and fresh visuals, and all of the right elements for an amazing franchise.  May we send the script?
